Oh Yeah…COMICS!!!

Since David Steinlicht(allsmall.net) foolishly encouraged me (danno) to write more film reviews for the site, I’m going to keep that up (fortunatly, I don’t hit the first-run theatre that often).

David however remembered the site is called CARTOONISTconspiracy.com and actually made a comic inspired by the SWEENEY TODD review below.

Enjoy Davids cartoon at allsmall.net

Also, be sure to check out the book “Seed Queen: The Story of Crop Art and the Amazing Lillian Colton” by Colleen Sheehy that David did the cover for.
He also does cartoons and designs for some newspaper for some city no one cares about.

SWEENEY TODD–Bloody…well, bloody.

So, given the choice X-MAS morning of seeing SWEENEY TODD with my wife and daughter, or going to ALIENSvsPREDATOR 2 by myself, I sucked-up my hatred for musicals and relied on my love of Tim Burton/Depp/Etc and saw Sweeney.

Hindsight being 20/20, I should have saw the space monsters.

SWEENEY had playful musical numbers that bored me to tears, and more gallons of fake blood than a after-school club for vampire lovers.

Speaking of vampires, I knew I was in trouble when a third of the way in, Sasha “Borat” Cohens awesome turn as an Italian uber-barber was upstaged–in my mind– by a cameo from Anthony Stewart “GILES from Buffy” Head. Head had one line. And I was more excited by that one line than anything else in the movie.

I should note, if you’re a goth, its practically porn, so….hope you’re goth!

I could be wrong about Burtons labor of love, but I think I’m right in saying that drop for bloody drop SWEENEY TODD has little to offer entertainment-wise to the masses.
Or as my wife put it-
“I really liked that…but i NEVER need to see it again.”

Do NOT seek the (National) TREASURE!!!

do NOT seek the (national) TREASURE!!!

OY!!!!
I was “lucky” enough to see a free premiere screening of possibly the worst film of all time last night—NATIONAL TREASURE 2: THE BOOK OF SECRETS.
Sure, the first NT was a lame-brained peice of doo, but at least it was mind-numbingly entertaining.
EPISODE 2, however, was just…well…imagine having shite shot in your face by a high-powered hose for 2 hours.
It was like that.
OH! And I refer to is episode 2 since, YES!!!, they set it up for a TRILOGY.
God willing, part 3 will never happen.
But I think God may be dead–its the only explaination for this film.
Tell EVERYONE you know NOT to see this movie.
NOT in the THEATER!
NOT on DVD!!
NOT for free on TNT in a year and a half!!!
Thank you all.

"SON OF A BITCH!!!!" or "Come to Diamonds THURSDAY"

I DID IT AGAIN!!!!!

So…Steve asked me if I’d take over posting about the monthly jam since I’m “responsible” and “wouldn’t wait until the last minute” to post this.
…yeah….so just pretend its like Monday and not the day before the jam…

The Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meets at 6:30 until 10:00 the first Thursday of every month at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe in Northeast.

Generally, we draw collaborative “jam” comics, socialize and drink caffeinated beverages. Afterwards, we often(sometimes) have uncaffeinated beverages somewhere else.
The meetings are open to anyone who wants to draw with us, and the results are posted on our website sooner or later(later) and sometimes even printed(…well…).

Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe
1618 Central Avenue NortheastMinneapolis, Minnesota
In the back hallway.
If there are D&D nerds there they spook easily so tell’em to skeedaddle.

Bus info here.

Please spend some money at Diamond’s while you’re there, even if it is just a cuppa coffee… they are excellent hosts, and we wanna stay welcome there.

Big Time Attic is now officially hosting our monthly jam meetings at Diamond’s… they will be supplying us with a big old plate of pastries or something each month. Thanks fellas!

Please print up 100 minis at a size no bigger than a 8.5 x 5.5 (a sheet of paper folded in half).

If you cannot attend the Dec 6th meeting, you areencouraged to either send your stuff with someone whocan, or drop it off in advance with Kevin and Zander at Big Time Attic.

They ask for the follwing if the ‘drop-off’ method is taken:

1) Label your box: – Name – Title of mini-comic – email address

2) Drop off at BTA during normal business hours. Address: 1618 Central Ave NE, #216, MPLS

3) Good idea to call before you drop, in case we’reout of the office. Phone: 612-521-7423

I will then make sure anyone who drops there stuff offin advance gets a box(in the case of MCAD people, I’llprobably get their boxes to MCAD organizer Sean Lynch and have him distribute).

see you all on the 6th!!!

Sore Winners

So thedailycrosshatch.com had a contest to put Guy Fawkes(‘V’) in holiday scenerios other than his own.
The MPLS cell of the Cartoonist Conspiracy did several pages of that at the last meeting.
The Daily Cross Hatch thought it was unfair to reward a group the prize of 3 issues of MOME(they know how we HATE sharing), so below is the link to what should have been(and really IS) the winning entry…
