24 HOUR MINI-COMIC BOXES

We will be putting together our boxes of 24 HOUR MINI-COMICS at the December 6th meeting of the Cartoonist Conspiracy.
You DO NOT need to have finished all 24 pages in order to participate.
All you’ll need to bring is 100 copies of your stuff in mini-comic form
(booklets no bigger than 8.5″x5.5″).
REPEAT: You DO NOT need to have finished all 24 pages in order to participate. All you’ll need to bring is 100 copies of your stuff in mini-comic form (booklets no bigger than 8.5″x5.5″).

Anyone who participated in 24 HOUR COMICS DAY in Minneapolis, whether they did it at BookArts or Mcad or home–is full encouraged to print up their books and put it in the box.

If you cannot attend the Dec 6th meeting, you are encouraged to drop it off with Kevin and Zander at Big Time Attic in advance. (I–danno–will then take on the task of getting you a box after the December 6th meeting)

Kevin and Zander ask for the follwing info if you ‘drop-off’ your stuff with them:

24 HOUR newsletter with PIZZA and BLOGGING UPDATE!!!

Greetings future tired cartoonist!!!
24 HOUR COMICS DAY is almost here.
October 20th, 2007
10am
CONTENTS:
1) MASSIVE NUMBERS
2) MINI-COMIC BOX SETS
3) PIZZA
4) CONSPIRACY/BOOK ARTS site info a) ADDRESS/START TIME b) WET PAINT c) WATER d) SNACK POTLUCK e) BLOGGER f) PARKING

1) BIG NEWS: MASSIVE NUMBERS Its our fourth year of doing 24 HOUR COMICS DAY here in Minneapolis, and its beginning to look like we could have close to(or over) 100 participants! “How is that possible?” you may ask. Well, there will be TWO LOCATIONS doing 24 HOUR COMICS this year.
That’s right! In addition to our usual BIG BRAIN/CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY sponsored site at the MN CENTER FOR BOOK ARTS, there will also be an MCAD-sponsored event for MCAD students, faculty, and alumni at (surprise!) MCAD. Both sights already each have 30 to 40 or more participants ready to go, and history has shown that number continues to grow right up until 10am on the 20th.
There will also be some time-constrained people trying their hand at a 8-12 hour comic.(We’ll get’em up to 24 by next year.)

2) MORE BIG NEWS: MINI-COMICS BOX SET 2007 With so many people taking the 24 HOUR CHALLENGE this year, its almost mandated we once again do a box set of mini-comics collecting the books that will be done on the 20th. AND SO WE SHALL!!! Yes, there is no better way to celebrate having finished(or nobly attempting) the 24 HOUR COMICS challenge than to print-up some mini-comics and throw’em in box so all the participants can see what everyone accomplished.
Box sets will probably be assembled during the December meeting of the CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY at DIAMONDS COFFEE SHOP, so this year there will be plenty of time to rest-up and get your books printed. (We will have more specific info on this around and after 24 HOUR DAY itself).
And NO, you DO NOT need to print-up books for the 24 HOUR box sets in order to participate in 24 HOUR COMICS DAY itself. But be aware, there will be scorn.
SCORN!

3) PIZZA
PIZZA LUCE will be providing a midnight treat for us again in exchange for us doing a comic for them. Pretty awesome deal, huh?!
Please bring a buck or two to throw in for a massive tip to their driver.

4) The BIG BRAIN/CONSPIRACY site-specific info

A) Address/Start TimeMinnesota Center for Book Arts is located inthe Open Book Building in downtown Minneapolis
1011 Washington Ave S, Suite 100
Minneapolis, MN 55415
Start time is 10am.
Please arrive between 9:15-9:45 in order to sign in and set up.

B) WET PAINTOnce again WET PAINT of St Paul will be setting up a small shop during the event. They will run from 11am to 2pm.
This is your chance to load up much needed supplies like brush pens, refills, pencils, pens, brushes, paper, ink, rulers, WHATEVER!They said they’d also once again try to get us some freebies.
Wet Paint is so awesome to us.
(NOTE: Since the event start an hour before Wet Paint “opens”, be sure to have some minimal supplies with you so you don’t waste a precious hour. But PLEASE remember Wet Paint will be there. We love having them on our side.)

C) WATER
BRING WATER!!!
A refillable bottle is probably the best way to go.
Nothing is worse than dehydration.
Well…some things are worse…but BRING WATER!!!

D) THE POTLUCK SNACK TABLE
Our addition last year of a POTLUCK SNACK TABLE was an great success and, I think, appreciated and munched-on by all. So lets do it again.
PLEASE BRING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TO SHARE:
**BEVERAGES( juice, soda, or beer. Yes, beer. Avidor wants to bring beer. Heck, I’m all for it. We can’t turn this into a kegger by any means, but if a couple of you want to buy brew, why not? Note: If you are underage, DO NOT drink one. You WILL be KICKED OUT!)
** HEALTHY CHOICES (fruit, vegetables, granola bars, etc)
** CHIPS
** CRACKERS
** COOKIES
* * am I really explaining snacks? ….sorry. You get the idea.
PLEASE BRING ONE TO SHARE

E) BLOGGING

David Steinlicht will be blogging for us.
Please link to your website:
http://24-hourcomic.blogspot.com/

F) PARKING
There is free parking in the BOOK ARTS lot that usually fills up pretty fast, but empties out as the day goes on.
Theres also 25 cent an hour meters on 3rd(the block behind BOOK ARTS that runs parallel to Washington) and theres a $2 pay-lot at Grumpys. The Grumpys one is iffy because the could get weird if there is a game at the dome or something.
ALSO—a good idea is to carpool.
ALSO ALSO—a better idea is to get someone to drop you off/pick you up. Its not advisable to drive after being up 24+ hours straight, but I do it every year so who am I to talk.
ALSO ALSO ALSO–buses and bikes work too.

That should be all.If you actually read this far, I thank you. You’re probably the only one.
SEE YOU BRIGHT AND EARLY ON THE 20th!!!

24 HOUR PRESS RELEASE

24 HOUR COMICS DAY

October 20th, 2007

Start time: 10am

@ the MN Center For Book Arts

1011 Washington Ave S, Suite 100Minneapolis, MN 55415
24 HOUR COMICS DAY us a yearly international event in which cartoonists around the globe take up the challenge of writing, drawing, and inking an entire 24 page comic in only 24 short hours. (The standard 24 page comic book usually takes about a month to produce.) The 24 HOUR challenge is as close to an extreme sport as most cartoonists will ever come. Thankfully, they get to do it all sitting down.

It is the 4th year of the event and and the fourth time the Minneapolis cell of the International Cartoonists Conspiracy and Big Brain Comics will be the local sponsors.

MN Center for Book Arts will be hosting the event for the 3rd year, and the third year Wet Paint Art Supplies will be co-sponsoring.

Signing-up to participate can be done online by emailing Conspiracy Events Coordinator Danno Klonowski at staplegenius@yahoo.com

Willing participants may also show up and register the day of the event at Book Arts(preferably before the 10am start time).

Last year we had about 50 cartoonists brave the challenge and nearly everyone succeeded. We’re hoping to grow our ranks even more this year.

Returning local 24 HOUR alum already ready to face the 2007 challenge include Kevin Cannon, Zander Cannon, Danno Klonowski, Steve Stwalley, Ken Avidor, David Steinlicht, Kevin McCarthy, Michael Furious, and Earl Luckes.

24 HOUR COMICS DAY doesn’t provide the thrills to an observer of a high-speed chase, but it makes for interesting people watching(well, watching people draw) and around 4am it usually breaks down into uncontrollable giggling and shouts of profanity. So, its family-friendly and fun for the kids!

Less than a month to 24 HOUR COMIC BOOK DAY!!!

We have less than a month now until 24 HOUR COMIC BOOK DAY, and I’m hoping to hear from you past(and I’m hoping from some of you FUTURE) participants to see if you’re interested.
I’m going to start harrassing sponsors this week, so hopefully we can score some free goodies.
We also did a “buffet” last year that seemed to go well, so I’m thinking we’ll do it again, except this time we’ll break down food categories by last name (example: A-D bring a beverage to share) so theres not so much overlapping.
Either way, its a great way to spend a day of your life, so I hope to hear from you!

Minneapolis / St. Paul:

Beloved local comic artist and bicycle advocate Eric Lappegard passed away on July 23rd from complications following an automobile accident. Eric was in the process of moving from Minneapolis to Portland, Oregon, when the accident occurred. Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Eric had spent the last number of years in Minneapolis, where he worked as a bicycle messenger and coffee shop java-slinger, artist, community organizer and bicycle advocate.Eric (a.k.a. Schmapples, a.k.a. Vegan Ninja) was an active member of the local comics collective The International Cartoonist Conspiracy, as well as a founding member of The Minneapolis Bicycle Federation, a group that advocates for a better cycling environment. Eric was a friendly face around town, a vegan who championed animal rights and environmental sustainability, and a friend to many people across the community. He will be greatly missed.

On Saturday, September 8th, friends of Eric are partnering with local businesses and arts organizations to pay tribute to a dear friend and important member of the art, music, and bicycling communities. All proceeds from the event will go to Eric’s family to aid them with expenses incurred as a result of this tragic accident. The Schmapples Tribute event will include a messenger-style alley cat bike race beginning at Behind Bars Bicycle Shop in Northeast Minneapolis.

Eric’s artwork, as well as donated artwork from local artists & members of the Cartoonist Conspiracy (cartoonistconspiracy.com), will be on display at Altered Esthetics (alteredesthetics.com) all day Saturday, with a silent auction and reception to begin at 5:00pm. Two original publications, “ALLEY CAT: A TRIBUTE TO ERIC LAPPEGARD” and “SCHMAPPLES: THE COLLECTED ONLINE COMIC by: Eric Lappegard”, have been created specifically for this event & will be on sale. Additional items for auction will be included, including gift certificates and highly-desirable items from local bicycle, comic and other businesses. Live music will be provided by the Roe Family Singers.

Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5. Prizes include artwork, comics, gift certificates and custom bicycle parts and products. A Vegan Bake Sale will also help to raise funds for the Lappegard family. For a complete schedule of events visit: http://myspace.com/ericlappegardtribute

Hey,

Danno here.
I’m trying to get this Eric benefit show ready and am need of MANY MANY frames.
Below is a list of what I need.
I don’t need exact sizes(since some sizes are pretty weird), but if you have something comperable lying around, PLEASE email me at:
staplegenius at yahoo.com
and THANKS!
See you Sept 8th at ALTERED ESTHETICS!!!!!!

6.5″x9.5″–1
5″x8.5″–1
8.5″x11″–2
7″x11″–2
10″x14″–4
11″x17″–1
11.5″x13″–1

the WEEKEND–a PERFECT TIME to work on your ERIC TRIBUTE!

The deadline is fast approaching—August 15th— to participate in the Alley Cat anthology to benefit Eric Lappegard.
This deadline is unfortunately pretty rigid, since we need the time to get the book printed.
If we get your artwork after the 15th, it will still be in the gallery show & sold via silent auction, but it will not be included in the anthology.
Please frame your own art, if possible… thrift stores work great for finding cheap frames. A frame will be provided if you cannot get one, but we’d certainly appreciate you getting your own.
Also, the fellas at Big Time Attic are at the Chicago Comicon until Monday, so you will want to wait until then to drop off your artwork.
Thanks much to all of you for participating.
Here is the info again about the anthology.
We don’t yet have a press release for the larger event (which will include a bike race and a music event), but here is a very rough one for the gallery part of the event:
Alley Cat Art Benefit at Altered Esthetics Opening 5-8PM September 8th
Altered Esthetics and The International Cartoonist Conspiracy have organized an evening of cartoon wonderments for your amusement and illumination, featuring the work of over 40 cartoonists! All sales will go directly to benefit the family of cartoonist Eric Lappegard, who died in July due to complications from a car accident.
The event will include:
The release of Alley Cat , and anthology collecting comics about cats, bikes and ninjas… a limited edition created and printed specifically for this event.
The release of Schmapples by Eric Lappegard, a complete collection of his wonderful online strip, which can be viewed at ericlappegard.com.
A wide variety of original art (including most of the artwork from the Alley Cat anthology) and prints will be sold via silent auction… with bids starting at $20 or less. It should be a great opportunity to get some wonderful artwork at very affordable prices.
Music at Altered Esthetics will be provided by The Roe Family Singers.
