St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy’s January 2009 Jam!

Good God has it been cold up here! We had been hovering around the minus 20 degree mark all this week and cartoonist STILL showed up to the jam! More than the signature page would have you believe as well! So, what’s keeping you from showing up to the next one?

Is it our long standing feud with the LARPers? Don’t worry. We have a truce. Is it because you have better things to do? Like what? I doubt there is anything better to do than to travel to St. Paul and create a jam comic. So, quit kidding yourself and show up to the next one!

If you’d like to participate in the next St. Paul jam, just show up on Thursday, February 19th, 2009 to Cosmic’s Coffee! Bring yourself and bring your friends, by force if you have to! Some cartoonists forced there friends to show up last time! What’s stopping you?

With President elect Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony this Tuesday, we decided to pay tribute to this historic event. Also, there is a guest appearance by your favorite neighborhood web slinger!

Check it out!

  1. I’m starting to think that the LARPers are getting used to our monthly visits. The one who was being annoying has now recognized me as the harbinger of our gatherings, and asked straight out when they would need to move tables and chairs without me saying a word.

I was very pleased with the turn-out we had, especially with the sub-zero temps we all had to endure.

  2. I think the Conspiracys motto for 2009 should be

    BAIL-OUT BOT–YES!
    BOOBS–NO!

I know the whole nudity/sex jokes thing really ebbs and flows in the COnspiracy jams (and I’m certainly guilty) but recently I’ve felt like I’m in middle school at the jams.
We’re smarter than boob jokes, right?
    Aren’t we?

If we can learn (or at least TRY) to develop past the crutch of “MEANWHILE” I don’t see why we can’t try to get past going back to boobs and dongers when we’re short on ideas.

YES! That stuff and be funny–if done sparingly.
And I think we’ve forgotten the “sparingly” part.

And yes, I know this means next month will probably be “ALL MEANWHILE PORNO COMIX” just to spite me.

  3. I agree with Danno. Although I tend to lean towards the dirty humor, I think it is more effective when it is used in moderation.

Now, I’m not talking about going PBS Kids for these things, but less nudity and graphic images would probably be refreshing change.

And yes, I know, I’m a guilty part as well, but I agree with Danno 100%. I just don’t want the jams turning into a bi-monthly Tijuana Bible. It may not appeal to newcomers and may alienate some mainstays.

  4. Another party pandering to perpetuating perversity here. And another vote for less, uh, porn.

I love telling people about the jams, and dragging fresh faces into the fold, so when people start asking to see what I’ve done I don’t like to say, “Oh, I can’t show you that one.”

However, I fully support Danno’s wonderful “ALL MEANWHILE PORNO COMIX” idea. 😉

  5. I also am in favor of toning it down, and I have been, in recent months, amongst the worst offender (at least in terms of volume of off-color humor – my ‘boob’ jokes tend to be of a far less extreme nature than the content found in other panel, however.)

The real problem, I think, is to know where to draw the line. Was my panel a while back, depicting a refrigerator full of breasts, bizarre and surreal enough to be worthwhile, or was it merely an excuse to draw eight pairs of breasts? I sure as heck don’t know!

    Roy

PS: Okay, actually, it was probably just an excuse to draw eight pairs of breasts. But even if it is a bad example, the point is still a valid one.

  6. Yeah, cock and shock jokes are always funny… and always easy. I wish folks would challenge themselves some more with this stuff.

Actually, doing some jams that are more character-based seems like it could be fun too… we tried a couple a number of years ago where we had a character at the outset, and I think this could be a fruitful angle. The foibles of characters is one of the most fruitful areas of humor in comics in general, and this sort of thing is almost entirely absent in jam comics (for obvious reasons).
